Final party

With artists including Bløf, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig and Sandra van Nieuwland

On Saturday 14 June 2014, the RUG400 anniversary month ended with a magnificent closing party in Groningen city centre. Performing artists included Bløf and De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, famous Groningers and former students such as Sandra van Nieuwland, the Noordpool Orchestra and many upcoming bands and artists. The closing party was no doubt a fitting finale to very special anniversary festivities.

The performances took place on the Grote Markt, Vismarkt and Waagplein. The three city squares all had their own musical programme filling the entire evening, with a wide variety of performers.

Grote Markt

The party will kick off on the Grote Markt at 8.30 p.m. Artists performing there will include singer Sandra van Nieuwland of The Voice fame, Ellen ten Damme, Joost Marsman, and Jan Rot, as well as Groningen’s most famous duo of all time, Pé Daalemmer & Rooie Rinus. The Noordpool Orchestra provided fitting and glorious accompaniment to all the acts. The evening ended with performances by Splendid and the Bløf line-up, winners of the Edison Pop Oeuvre Award 2014.

The Vismarkt was the place to be to check out upcoming bands and artists. Talent band Orange Skyline took the stage first. They wowed Eurosonic in 2013 and 2014, and were openers for the Kaiser Chiefs earlier this month in De Oosterpoort. Other artists on the Vismarkt stage included DJ Bassanova, Belgian pop group Puggy and Maison du Malheur, a jazz and rhythm & blues band that made waves at Noorderslag and Lowlands, delighting the crowds. De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig ended the night on the Vismarkt with what no doubt was another of their hot & snap-crackling shows.

The Waagplein was home to the IKEA Lounge on 14 June, where you could enjoy a bite to eat and a drink. The AMF Jazzband provided the musical accompaniment for the entire evening. This was also where you had the chance to view For Infinity – The Movie.

Gift for Infinity

During the entire month of RUG400 festivities, centre stage has been given to the Gift for Infinity, comprising research into ageing in active fashion: Let Old Be Gold! Everyone could contribute to it by purchasing tickets to events, having a For Infinity Daily for dinner, buying magazines, donating in various ways, visiting the charity auction or dinner, and much, much more.
